Celebrate Vyshyvanka Day

Celebrate Vyshyvanka Day

Please join the Center for Global Engagement and FSU’s Ukraine Task Force on Wednesday, May 15 in The Globe Auditorium from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. for a celebration of Vyshyvanka Day, a holiday celebrated by Ukrainians all over the world.

Vyshyvankas are embroidered shirts that capture Ukrainian folk tradition. They are imbued with symbolism and meaning. The vyshyvankas from Ivano Frankivsk in Western Ukraine will use different patterns and colors than the ones from Eastern Donetsk or Southern Kherson. They are worn be people of all ages. Although these shirts have historically been associated with folklife, they are increasingly used in urban settings, as part of formal Western attire, and as t-shirts in daily life to express the Ukrainian people's desire for independence.  Please join this special cultural event as we celebrate Vyshyvanka Day with the Ukrainian diaspora in Tallahassee and learn more about their country and traditions.

This event also counts toward one of the intercultural event requirements for the Global Citizenship Certificate.
