Literacy

Learning Systems Institute (LSI) at Florida State University recognizes the importance of literacy development across the lifetime. Our faculty possesses deep knowledge of emergent, foundational, and content-area literacy skills that young children and students of all ages need to master in order to achieve academic success.

Our activities focus on supporting government actors, teacher, parents, and caregivers to implement global best practices for literacy education. LSI proudly co-chairs the Reading Comprehension Group, a network of literacy and education practitioners and researchers who gather regularly to share knowledge, learn from each other's experiences, and work together to develop resources and tools to improve reading comprehension among young learners globally.

Recently, LSI supported the government of Malawi to design, develop, pilot, and roll out a new national curriculum for Language Arts in both English and Chichewa. This process resulted in new teacher guides and learner books in both languages for grades five through eight. Throughout this process, we built the capacity of local curriculum developers in the area of literacy pedagogical content knowledge and instructional approaches.
