Florida State's Learning Systems Institute (LSI) held its first professional learning course for K-5 Gulf Coast teachers from July 22 to 26. The teacher workshop, which is part of the workforce training and education component of FSU's Institute for Strategic Partnerships, Innovation, Research, and Education (InSPIRE), was conducted by the CPALMS staff from the Florida Center for Research in STEM.

Florida State University’s Learning Systems Institute has been awarded a four-year, $4 million grant by The U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. The Successful Start project is a partnership between Florida State University’s Learning Systems Institute (LSI), The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and Hillsborough County Public Schools. The project team, led by Dr. Amanda Tazaz, provides early elementary school teachers with eight days of mathematics teacher professional development based on Cognitively Guided Instruction. In the 2023-2024 school year, 150 teachers from 20 elementary schools joined the CGI teacher training program as part of the Successful Start project.

Schoen's research delves into the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning methods in middle school math education, offering valuable insights for educators seeking to improve student engagement and understanding.

To continue to find new ways to help teachers, CPALMS recently launched a weekly segment of CPALMS Teacher Perspective Videos. These videos feature math teachers from Florida who share practical classroom tips and personal techniques for transitioning into new benchmarks. These weekly uploads contain helpful ideas applicable to multiple grade levels.

In February, LSI Graduate Research Assistant Shelby McCrackin was one of 24 Florida State University doctoral students who were celebrated for receiving the McKnight Doctoral or Dissertation Fellowship at the 38th Annual McKnight Fellows Meeting and Research & Writing Conference in Tampa.

Starting in the summer of 2024 and continuing into the summer of 2025, Principal Investigator Amanda Tazaz, Ph.D., will lead a partnership of geoscience agencies in the state and several departments at FSU and Florida A&M University to develop four geoscience summer camp programs that will be implemented with pre-college students attending summer camp at the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend.
