Ukraine Task Force Celebrates Vyshyvanka Day with FSU and Local Community
Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State University’s Ukraine Task Force (UTF) joined in the worldwide celebration of Ukrainian culture and resilience by hosting a Global Vyshyvanka Day celebration for the third consecutive year on FSU’s campus. The event was organized with the support of the UTF, FSU’s Center for Global Engagement and Ukrainian diaspora in Tallahassee.
The Vyshyvanka Day event brought together FSU students and faculty and residents to celebrate the rich traditions and enduring spirit represented by the Ukrainian vyshyvanka, the traditional embroidered shirt that has become a powerful symbol of national identity and resistance.
“Several American attendees who had never previously been connected to Ukraine approached us in tears afterward, sharing how deeply touching and meaningful the event was,” said Dr. Anna Romanova. “This demonstrates how cultural traditions can unite people across backgrounds and create empathy during difficult times.”
The event featured the presentation “Ukrainian Vyshyvanka: Stitched in Tradition, Worn in Resistance” by Ukrainian cultural expert Kateryna Ovcharenko, as well as a fashion show, workshops, Ukrainian music, traditional food and community gathering.

Global Vyshyvanka Day began twenty years ago as a student initiative launched by Lesya Voronuk at Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine. Since then, it has evolved into a global movement celebrated in hundreds of cities worldwide, supported by communities, universities and governments in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Today, Vyshyvanka Day serves not only as a celebration of Ukrainian heritage but also as a reminder of resilience, dignity and cultural continuity during one of the most challenging periods in Ukraine’s modern history.
